Smart City Locating Rebuild

Turning a stalled rebuild into an award-winning growth platform

Smart City Locating

Overview

Smart City Locating is a multi-city real estate service helping renters explore apartment listings and neighborhoods in fast-growing markets. As the company expanded, its website became central to lead generation and day-to-day operations.

When Dreamers of Day joined the project, a rebuild of the Smart City Locating site was already underway, but had complicated and ultimately stalled short of launch. The team completed and stabilized the rebuild, delivering a high-performance WordPress platform that improves editorial workflows and provides a faster, more reliable experience for renters.

The finished project was later recognized with a Web Excellence Award, validating its design and technical execution.

Challenge

A Stalled Rebuild with Real Business Risk

Smart City Locating’s in-progress rebuild had not reached a stable or launch-ready state. At the same time, the existing platform could not be taken offline or disrupted. The website was relied upon daily for lead capture, renter inquiries, and city-level operations. Any instability risked immediate business impact.

Supporting Rapid Growth Without Slowing Teams Down

Listings, neighborhoods, and city pages change constantly. The existing CMS and content structure made updates harder than they needed to be, slowing internal teams and increasing dependency on developers at a time when speed mattered most.

Operating Two Platforms At Once

The team needed to support a live legacy system while completing and stabilizing its replacement. This dual-track approach increased technical complexity and required careful coordination to avoid lost leads, broken forms, or inconsistent content during the transition.

Performance And Search Visibility Concerns

The site was failing Core Web Vitals benchmarks, with slow load times and inconsistent responsiveness across key pages. These issues affected renter experience and threatened organic search visibility in highly competitive real estate markets.

A Compressed Delivery Timeline

From assessment to launch, the project needed to move forward within an 8 to 10-week window. This timeline included technical auditing, architectural cleanup, CMS restructuring, accessibility validation, and deployment.

Solution

Technical Assessment and Architectural Cleanup

Dreamers of Day began with a detailed technical review of the inherited build. Stable components were preserved where possible, while fragile or incomplete systems were refactored or rebuilt. This approach protected prior investment while elevating the Smart City Locating site to a modern, maintainable standard.

Scalable WordPress CMS with Gutenberg Blocks

In close partnership with Bellwether, we translated an evolving design language into a fully implemented digital experience. Working from a flexible design foundation, we extended the available system using pattern-based logic, recreating legacy layouts as modular blocks—all while staying true to the brand’s tone and visual integrity.

Stabilized Search, Listings, And Form Workflows

React-powered search and listing experiences were refined for speed and reliability. Mission-critical forms were audited and migrated away from Firebase into Smart City Locating’s internal backend tools. This consolidated submissions, notifications, and CRM workflows into a more dependable and maintainable system.

Performance And Accessibility Optimization

Through asset optimization, caching improvements, and more efficient rendering paths, the redesigned platform achieved a full Core Web Vitals pass. Accessibility was treated as a first-class requirement, with semantic markup, keyboard navigation, accessible form structures, and WCAG 2.2 AA alignment built into templates and components.

Live-Site Continuity And Coordinated Launch

Throughout development, the legacy site remained fully operational. Careful version control, deployment planning, and coordination across teams ensured uninterrupted lead flow while the new platform was completed and launched.
