WordPress Engineer (Contract)
Employment Type: Contract
Location: Remote
Compensation: Hourly, based on experience
About this Role
We’re looking for a WordPress Engineer who builds with AI as a core part of their workflow, not as an afterthought.
In this role, you will work on custom WordPress platforms while using tools like Claude Code to accelerate development, improve quality, and automate repetitive work. You will operate in an environment where context, systems, and structured workflows matter as much as code itself.
You will collaborate with our engineering, design, and project teams to deliver scalable, high-performance digital experiences. At the same time, you will continuously refine how work gets done by improving prompts, structuring context, and leveraging AI to increase output and consistency.
This is not traditional WordPress development. It is suited for engineers who are curious, fast-moving, and comfortable working at the intersection of development and AI.
Responsibilities
Build high-quality WordPress experiences using AI-assisted development workflows (Claude Code, etc.)
Translate Figma designs into production-ready implementations with AI acceleration
Continuously refine prompts, context, and workflows to improve output quality
Ship faster by leveraging AI for scaffolding, debugging, and iteration
Ensure all output meets standards for performance, accessibility, and scalability
Collaborate with engineers and PMs while maintaining strong ownership
Document decisions and structure context so others (and AI) can build on your work
Qualifications & Experience
Strong experience with WordPress development (custom themes, plugins, block editor/FSE)
Proven ability to use AI tools (Claude Code, ChatGPT, Codex, etc.) in production workflows
Deep understanding of modern PHP, JavaScript, APIs, and frontend systems
Experience working in Git-based, collaborative environments
Strong grasp of performance optimization and accessibility (WCAG)
Ability to structure problems clearly so AI can execute effectively
Bonus Points
Experience building internal tools, agents, or automation systems
Familiarity with context engineering, prompt systems, or multi-agent workflows
Experience integrating AI into real production pipelines
Comfort working with tools like Composer, WP-CLI, Lando, etc.
Experience with CI/CD, testing, or DevOps workflows
